Asime Presents the TECHCO2 Project to Decarbonize Maritime Transport
Galician engineering firm Willbö, together with Silecmar and Neuwalme, presented at Asime's headquarters in Vigo the TECHCO2 project, an R&D&I initiative aimed at building the MRV (Measurement, Reporting and Verification) framework for CO₂ captured on board ships. Funded by the Nexos call of the Galician Innovation Agency and co-financed with EU FEDER funds, the project continues the CAPCO₂ system, a pioneer in Spain in CO₂ capture in maritime environments, and tackles the piece currently blocking its commercial deployment: turning every kilogram captured into verifiable, certifiable data for regulators, classification societies and carbon markets. Following the IMO's MEPC 84 and the entry into force of FuelEU Maritime and the maritime EU ETS, shipowners installing on-board capture systems will only benefit from deductions if they demonstrate full traceability of the captured CO₂, from the ship's funnel to its final valorization in port. With an eligible budget of 676,459.60 euros and a 35-month execution period (November 2025 to September 2028), the project is structured into four work packages: Willbö leads mass-balance engineering, marinized sensing and digital integration; Silecmar develops real-time IoT monitoring and liquid-CO₂ bunkering protocols; and Neuwalme designs the dispensing systems and the digital traceability architecture based on blockchain, digital twins and AI. The event was closed by Alberto Jaraiz of the Vigo Port Authority and reinforces Galicia's position as a European node for maritime decarbonization.
