SICUR 2026: emerging technologies expand public security capabilities, new EU rules demand accountability

SICUR 2026 (organised by IFEMA MADRID, 24–27 February) dedicated its third day to the session Technology for Public Security, held with the Circle of Technologies for Defence and Security. Senior officials from Spain's Ministry of Digital Transformation, Ministry of the Interior, National Police and Civil Guard confirmed that emerging technologies significantly expand public security capabilities, but their deployment requires robust digital infrastructure and secure supply chains. The new EU regulatory framework (NIS2, CRA) shifts focus from mere technology adoption to systematic risk management, traceability and accountability. A workplace safety panel with Fundación Mapfre and INSST noted Spain's 58% reduction in workplace accident rates over three decades, while identifying psychosocial risks and climate change as new challenges. SICUR CYBER covered EU cybersecurity funding opportunities and biometrics for security. A civil protection session addressed fire risks from solar PV, electric transport stations and energy storage systems.
