Amazon Accelerate jumps from Silver to Platinum under EIC standards, two years ahead of schedule

Amazon Accelerate moved from Silver Level Certification in 2024 to Platinum Level Certification in 2025 under the EIC Sustainable Event Standards, reaching Platinum two years earlier than planned; the team had originally targeted Gold by 2026 and Platinum by 2027. The shift was organisational rather than a matter of adding initiatives. Accelerate's carbon footprint was first measured retroactively in 2023; across 2024 and 2025 the team moved from a reactive, measurement-led approach to embedding sustainability in the event's systems, making it a standing item in core planning meetings with defined targets and a shared electronic tracker documenting decisions and assigning responsibility across more than eight major stakeholders. Held at the LEED Platinum-certified Summit Building of the Seattle Convention Center, the event monitored and optimised energy use across its footprint and achieved an 88.5% waste diversion rate using compostable and recyclable service ware, clearly marked receptacles, onsite staff training and Oscar AI Sort stations, which reached 92.4% accuracy in sorting bottles and cans across 25,042 interactions. Working with The Green Room and Brumark Total Flooring Solutions, the event diverted 71,435 pounds of carpet, artificial turf and printed graphics from landfill. Through the Accelerate Gives Back programme, more than 4,700 items were donated to local organisations and US$25,000 given to Seattle charities, with more than 27 local charities involved and seven participation opportunities created for attendees. Maritz and Reduce2 supported carbon measurement, data collection and implementation auditing.
