Malaysia's Trade Hits Historic High in January 2026; E&E Exports Lead Growth
Malaysia's total trade reached a historic high of RM272.37 billion in January 2026 (+12.6% YoY), with exports surging to RM146.87 billion (+19.6%), marking seven consecutive months of positive growth. The trade surplus soared to RM21.37 billion (+483.9% from Jan 2025). Electrical & Electronics (E&E) dominated exports with 48% share at RM70.53 billion (+39.5%). Other high-growth sectors: optical/scientific equipment (+36.2%), processed food (+16.5%), transport equipment (+13.8%), and machinery (+13%). Major export markets: ASEAN RM39.42B (+7.1%), US RM23.1B (+33.9%), China RM15.47B (+16.1%), Taiwan RM9.93B (+79.4%—record monthly high). FTA partner exports reached RM95.22B (+14.5%), comprising 64.8% of total exports, with Mexico (+122.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (+58%) recording strongest growth.
