Marina Bay Sands turns 100,000 litres of used cooking oil a year into renewable diesel for its back-up generators

In 2025 Marina Bay Sands became, by its own account, the first hospitality organisation in Asia to establish a closed-loop renewable fuel ecosystem. Roughly 100,000 litres of used cooking oil a year from the integrated resort's culinary operations, including banquet operations at its Expo & Convention Centre, are collected and diverted from conventional waste streams. The oil is drummed and sent to Neste, the world's largest refiner of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, which has operated in Singapore since 2010. Once refined into renewable diesel, the fuel is procured back by the property to power its back-up generators, closing the loop. The resort says the substitution delivers up to a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the fuel's lifecycle. The case was published by the Events Industry Council as an example of how venue operators can build circularity into mission-critical infrastructure rather than treating sustainability as a separate programme.
