MATRADE Announces Strategic Mitigation Measures to Safeguard Malaysian Exports Amid West Asia Tensions

Military escalations involving Iran, Israel, and the US beginning February 28, 2026 triggered maritime blockades and supply chain disruptions affecting Malaysian trade. MATRADE surveyed exporters: 63.9% anticipate being impacted, and 39.1% currently export to the region (primarily UAE and Saudi Arabia). MATRADE implemented six interventions: logistics rerouting to alternative ports (Fujairah, Salalah), market diversification toward South Asia, Latin America, Africa, and ASEAN, virtual trade matching, financial and insurance advisory, FTA optimization leveraging RCEP and CPTPP, and intra-ASEAN realignment. MATRADE trade offices in Dubai, Jeddah, and Cairo provide real-time market intelligence. Respondents included MSMEs (53.7%), mid-tier firms (32.7%), and multinationals (13.6%).
